Brief

SuperAwesome engaged us to help find solutions to their problems of scaling to deliver a global service.

Challenge

SuperAwesome is a UK start-up which now claims a global audience of more than 500 million children using its kid safe content services that enforce strict compliance with international laws around child protection, like COPPA and Europe’s GDPR-K.

Their product team had challenges in delivering their service at scale. Product and technology issues included delivery speed, reliability and quality, inability to harness new technologies and high operational costs particularly of serving streaming video.

Solution

We embedded experts with senior technology skills into the SuperAwesome engineering team providing mentoring, for the group and one-to-one. Through this model we then provided technical oversight and guidance.

We progressively shared our skills and experience and specific product knowledge. This approach harnessed the immediacy and high value of collaborative informal learning. We reviewed the teams existing ways of working and made changes collaboratively with the team. This enabled them to develop newfound confidence and speed with decision making and delivery. Individuals in the team achieved more, and they felt more valuable in their role within the team.

We provided learning sessions on specific topics and technologies, such as how to better leverage cloud technologies, to increase shared knowledge. This approach created tangible outcomes that included a successful migration to a Continuous Delivery model, enabling the team to massively reduce risks and confidently implement product changes, all while being faster and cheaper.

Outcome

Our work with SuperAwesome greatly up-skilled their internal capability but also resulted in significant tangible results such as massively reducing their monthly operational infrastructure costs by tens of thousands of pounds. This was achieved by setting up a self-managing cloud infrastructure cluster built dynamically from a combination of spot and on-demand instances depending on current market prices.

We greatly enjoyed helping SuperAwesome to better harness their people, teams and new technologies to become more effective and efficient. And as a result to help set the foundations for their growth to becoming global leaders in online protection for children.
