Alison Evans

Content Designer

As Content Designer in CYB, I’m working with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to improve the way we present information to British people living and travelling abroad. Part of my work is with a team creating an AI tool that helps people get clear, accurate online advice when they’re most in need of help.

I came to content design through a curiosity for language, psychology and pedantry. I’ve worked as a content designer with government departments including the Office for National Statistics, UK Research and Innovation, and the Department for Transport. I was with the ONS as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded. It was a unique opportunity to think about diverse user needs in a rapidly changing, high-stakes environment.

My work background has mainly involved creating accurate, accessible content from complex source information. My time at Welsh publisher, Parthian, editing and designing fiction and poetry books added another dimension to my understanding of how people engage with different types of content. I edited, typeset, and designed fiction and poetry books from around the world and got to work with writers and translators from faraway lands, like Lithuania and Pembrokeshire!

Personal experience means I can’t help but zoom in on accessibility and inclusivity in design. My adult son has a rare genetic condition - Fragile X Syndrome. I give talks to genomics specialists, health professionals and students about my experience of being a parent carer. I’m also a media contact for Carers UK, so I often get to share my views on disability and caring, and get involved in campaigns and raising awareness of living with disability. I like to think about how small actions have big impacts.

This mix of experience, knowledge and motivation feels like a great match with the CYB philosophy and energy. We need to keep asking questions, keep learning, and keep striving mindfully to design clear, consistent content in services that work for everyone.
